Tasting note: Deep old-gold colour. On the nose, Talisker 18 opens with polished oak, rich toffee and caramel, then unfurls maritime notes of sea spray, smoked seaweed and a gentle coastal brine. Beneath are layers of dried fruit, vanilla and warm spice. On the palate it’s full and oily with honeyed entry, evolving into peppery smoke, tobacco and a clean salty minerality. The finish is long, warming and slightly drying with lingering smoke and black pepper.
Producer notes: Made by Talisker on the Isle of Skye and owned by Diageo, this 18-year-old expression is a carefully matured single malt that balances the distillery’s trademark maritime peat character with refined oak development. Bottled at c.46% ABV and sealed with a T-top cork, it reflects the house style: robust, coastal and complex.
Distillation & maturation: Distilled in traditional copper pot stills and matured for 18 years in oak casks, the spirit gains softness and sweetness from the wood while retaining maritime smoke and peppery esters. The mix of American and European oak influence gives notes of vanilla, toffee and dried fruit framed by spice and saline notes.
Vineyard / barley & environment notes: Though not a vineyard wine, the barley and peat that feed Talisker are shaped by the Isle of Skye’s harsh coastal climate — salt-laden winds, ocean mist and peat bogs. Those elements lend the whisky its characteristic briny, smoky profile and an underlying earthy minerality.
Serve & enjoy: Best enjoyed neat or with a few drops of water to open aromas. Let rest in the glass ~15 minutes to reveal layers. Ideal as a contemplative after-dinner dram or paired with smoked seafood, aged cheeses or dark chocolate.
