Tasting note: A powerful, classically structured vintage with ripe black and red fruit at the core — think black raspberries and blueberry compote — layered with dried herbs, spiced clove, cedar and a mineral, pumice-like note. The palate is dense and concentrated, driven by firm, textured tannins and a supple, creamy mouthfeel that balances the weight and keeps the finish long and focused. Producer notes: From Anakota’s Helena Montana single-vineyard on the flanks of Mount St. Helena, this bottling reflects a high-elevation site (approx. 950 ft) on volcanic, well-draining soils. Anakota has specialized in single-vineyard, single-appellation estate bottlings since the early 2000s and in 2019 Pierre Seillan’s touch brought notable poise to a characteristically powerful vintage. Winemaking notes: Fermented and handled to preserve primary fruit while building mid-palate concentration; careful aging in premium oak has added spice, cedar and polish without overwhelming the vineyard signature. The 2019 growing season’s wet winter followed by warm ripening produced unusually generous extraction and ripe tannic structure. Vineyard notes: Helena Montana sits above the valley floor with sparse volcanic gravel and silt-loam soils that stress the vines and concentrate flavors. Elevation and drainage deliver ripe phenolics and a mineral backbone that shows clearly on the nose and palate. Cellaring & service: Built for medium-term ageing but approachable with air — decant about 90 minutes if drinking now. Best drinking window 2024–2045.
