Tasting note
Château Fombrauge’s 2021 Grand Cru Classé expresses the estate’s long history and distinctive terroir with generosity and polish. On the nose: concentrated dark-plum and cassis notes layered with licorice, espresso, cocoa and a hint of mint and floral lift. The palate is round and plush—creamy texture, juicy black fruit and integrated oak—while ripe, cushioned tannins provide structure without harshness. Expect a chocolatey-salty, persistent finish and good ageing potential (drinking window c.2024–2038). Producer notes: parcel selection by terroir, drone-assisted vigor and maturity mapping, manual harvest in small crates, double sorting and gravity-fed filling into small-capacity wood, stainless and concrete vats. Winemaking highlights: cool pre-fermentation maceration (4–8 days at ~8°C), entirely manual pigeage, 18 months maturation in oak. Vineyard: gravelly-sandy soils over clay subsoil contributing to depth and finesse. Owner: Bernard Magrez. Dry, elegantly oaked, and classically Saint-Émilion in style.
