Tasting note: Deep garnet with just a touch of brick at the rim. The bouquet opens generously with earthy loam and black truffle, layered over dark cherry, leather, tar and hints of black olive and cedar. On the palate it shows refined, very fine tannins, lively acidity and an elegant, medium-plus body that supports concentrated savoury fruit and tobacco notes. The finish is long and harmonious. Producer notes: Château Palmer speaks of terroir, devotion and balance. The estate focuses on wines of focus, length and silk — a clear signature across vintages. Winemaking & cellar notes: Hand-harvested during the late-September to early-October picking window, this vintage was matured in oak and bottled under cork. Thomas Duroux oversaw the cellar work, producing a wine with polished tannins and restrained oak integration. Vineyard notes & vintage: From 66 hectares of gravelly soils in the heart of Margaux overlooking the Gironde estuary, the 1996 vintage experienced a challenging season that nonetheless delivered exceptional ripeness and balance. The resulting wine is often described as refined, with discreet tannins and a poised acidity that keeps it lively and approachable now.
