Tasting note
Espérance de Trotanoy 2019 is a concentrated, terroir-driven Pomerol that marries plush dark fruit with a firm mineral backbone. Aromas open to ripe black cherry, plum and blackberry, layered with cocoa, toast and subtle graphite. On the palate it shows impressive density and a silky, controlled extraction—velvety tannins frame rich mid-palate fruit while iron-rich soil notes and a hint of spice bring structure. Producer notes highlight parcels of gravel and clay topped by an iron-rich subsoil (‘crasse de fer’), giving power, depth and complexity. Hand-harvested with double sorting, fermentations are carried out in temperature-controlled concrete and stainless vats with gentle maceration and extraction. The wine spent 16–18 months in French oak (about 50% new), adding spice and fine toast without overwhelming the fruit. Approachable after decanting, it will continue to reward cellaring over the decade.
Winery
Château Trotanoy (owned by Jean-Pierre Moueix). A historic Pomerol estate on a plateau of gravel and heavy clay with an iron-rich subsoil. Since 2009 select gravel parcels on the north-east plateau have been bottled as Espérance de Trotanoy, a more approachable yet terroir-expressive cuvée. Vineyard work is meticulous, harvest is by hand, and winemaking emphasizes gentle extraction and careful oak ageing to preserve concentration and complexity.
