The palate is remarkably supple yet structured — firm, fine-grained tannins encase rich dark fruit and spice, while discreet French oak lends savoury complexity. The finish is long and persistent, revealing the wine's depth and balance. Producer & Vineyard: Opus One was born from the partnership of Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, a project dedicated to uncompromising quality. The estate's four parcels lie on the western side of Oakville AVA, including 100 acres within the famed To Kalon and roughly 70 acres across the Ballestra and River parcels. Hand-harvesting and selective traditional practices combine with targeted modern techniques to manage vine health and fruit quality. Winemaking & Ageing: Made under winemakers Tim Mondavi and Patrick Léon, the 1987 vintage saw 24 days of skin contact and was aged 18 months in new French oak barrels. The result is a Bordeaux-styled, bold and structured wine that has matured gracefully. Cellaring & Service: Drinking window extends to 2036; decant gently for about 45 minutes to remove any sediment and to open the bouquet.
