Tasting Note: The 1989 Opus One opens with an intense depth of color and a rich, floral bouquet that unfolds into elegant, supple layers on the palate. Firm structural tannins and bright, cool-season acidity lend the wine a lean, vigorous profile, while balance and accessibility remain central — complexity and finesse are evident through a long, refined finish. Producer & Winery: Born from the collaboration of Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, Opus One was conceived as a single, uncompromising wine. That founding mission still guides the estate, combining Old World pedigree with Napa innovation. Vineyard Notes: Estate vineyards comprise four parcels in western Oakville AVA, including holdings within the famed To Kalon, plus the Ballestra and River parcels surrounding the winery. Fruit is hand-harvested where tradition best serves quality; modern techniques are selectively adopted when beneficial. Winemaking & Ageing: The 1989 vintage saw a long, cool growing season with late rains producing moderate ripeness and energetic acidity. The wine underwent 31 days of skin contact and was aged 17 months in new French oak, imparting structure and subtle toast while preserving freshness. Overall: A classic Napa Bordeaux-style expression from a revered estate — refined, structured and still evolving, best approached with a short decant to settle the bottle and reveal its layered aromatics.
