2020 Penfolds St Henri Shiraz
2020 Penfolds St Henri Shiraz
Tasting Note: Perfumed and intense, this vintage opens with rich black fruit—blackberry, plum and blueberry—followed by layers of dried herb, ground pepper, liquorice and subtle anise. The palate is plush and concentrated, supported by powerful, chalky tannins and a vivid, tea‑leaf-tinged finish. Producer & Winemaking Notes: St. Henri is a multi-regional South Australian blend crafted in the Penfolds tradition, respecting an older‑style expression without new oak. The wine is matured in seasoned large American oak vats for roughly 15–18 months, a technique that emphasises pure fruit and textural complexity rather than heavy oak flavour. Vineyard Notes: Fruit for the 2020 bottling is drawn from McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and Clare Valley — regions that together bring ripe, exuberant fruit, spice and minerality. The 2020 season delivered concentrated, generous fruit; a small supporting portion of another variety adds structural lift without altering the wine’s core character. Drinkability & Cellaring: Plush now with firm structure; rewards decanting (1–2 hours) and will age gracefully through the 2030s.

Penfolds is one of Australia’s most storied wine houses, with a history of influential wines and long‑lived benchmarks. St. Henri, first produced in the 1950s, represents a classic Penfolds alternative: a multi‑regional South Australian blend matured in seasoned large oak vats to showcase ripe fruit, structural grip and long-term ageing potential. The wine is made under the stewardship of chief winemaker Peter Gago and owned by Treasury Wine Estates.
