Tasting note
Tasting Note: The 2017 Sarmassa opens with an earthy, terroir-driven bouquet—tilled soil and dried flowers meet dark-skinned fruit, tar and cedar. On the palate it is medium–full, showing prune, espresso and toasted hazelnut with firm, close-grained, chewy tannins and a concentrated, savory finish. Producer Notes: From the family estate run by Virna Borgogno (continuing the legacy of Lodovico), this single-vineyard bottling emphasizes site expression and classic Barolo structure. The house style balances tradition with careful cellar work to showcase the cru’s personality. Winemaking Notes: Fermented with attention to phenolic extraction and matured in seasoned wood to integrate spice and toasted notes without overwhelming fruit. Extended élevage has softened early austerity while preserving the wine’s freshness and long-term structure. Vineyard Notes: Sourced from the Sarmassa hillside, the vines benefit from good exposure and well-drained, mineral-rich soils that lend the wine its stony backbone and aromatic lift. Yields are managed to concentrate flavors and maintain tension between ripeness and acidity.
