Tasting note: Bright pale-gold in the glass, this Pessac-Léognan white opens with perfumed aromatics of grapefruit, orange zest and honeydew, followed by layered tropical notes of mango and ripe citrus. Subtle nougat and toasted oak weave through vanilla and a nutty, saline undertone. On the palate it is rich and unctuous yet lively — creamy lees and well-integrated new oak give weight and a velvety texture balanced by fresh acidity, finishing long and nutty. Producer & vineyard: Chateau Pape Clément, owned by Bernard Magrez and guided by consultants including Michel Rolland and Julien Viaud, is one of Bordeaux’s historic estates. The team practice parcel-based viticulture with natural grass cover, use of oxen and horse-drawn ploughing between rows, integrated pest management and hold Terra Vitis and HVE3 certifications. Grapes are hand-harvested in two passes to select optimum ripeness. Winemaking & ageing: Fruit is whole-berry pressed under inert atmosphere and gravity-transported to French oak barrels for settling and fermentation. The wine is aged 16 months in oak, with lees ageing and bâtonnage for texture; about 15% of the lot sees concrete egg ageing for additional tension. Result is a powerful, age-worthy white with oak influence that remains balanced by acidity. Serve lightly chilled and decant (about 45 minutes) if you want the oak and lees to breathe. Drinking window spans many years — approachable now for the richer profile, and cellarable for further integration.
