Tasting note

Te Kahu ("the cloak") takes its name from the morning mist that wraps the vineyards in the Tukituki Valley. This 2016 bottling is a concentrated, structured red with a brooding aromatic profile — notes of cassis and ripe black fruits sit alongside black olive, dried tobacco and soft hints of caramel and vanilla-tinged oak. The palate is focused and plush, dark-fruited and framed by fine, grainy tannins that carry through to a long, espresso-tinged finish. Made by Craggy Range with a site-driven approach, fermentation was completed in closed-top stainless-steel tanks before seventeen months' maturation in French oak barriques (approximately 20% new). The vintage, influenced by El Niño, delivered a cool, wet start and a warm finish, concentrating flavour on the free-draining Gimblett Gravels soils. Screwcap ensures freshness and long-term development in bottle. Best enjoyed after gentle decanting to reveal layered tertiary notes.

Winery

Craggy Range Winery — a family-owned estate led by Terry and Mary Peabody, focused on site-driven wines from notable Hawke's Bay vineyards. Te Kahu comes from parcels in the Gimblett Gravels and reflects the vineyard's free-draining soils and maritime-influenced climate.
