Tasting note: Perfumed and finely detailed, this Central Otago release opens with pressed-rose florals, bright red cherry and wild strawberry, edged by white pepper and a hint of fresh thyme. The palate is juicy and textural – a pleasing chalky mouthfeel carries layered red fruit, subtle savoury spice and soft vanilla from French oak. Fine, polished tannins and lively acidity keep the wine focused and balanced. Producer & vineyard: Crafted by Blank Canvas Wines (owners Matt Thomson and Sophie Parker‑Thomson), this wine comes from older, wind‑blown silt and schist loess sitting atop rocky schist and alluvial gravels. Vines are high‑cordon and VSP trained, averaging about 19 years old — a site that delivers clarity and energy. Winemaking & ageing: A small, hand‑picked parcel from the Anthem vineyard was refrigerated and trucked to the Marlborough winery. Winemakers left 50% of the clusters whole and crushed the rest over the bunches, then ran a 4–5 day cold soak followed by spontaneous fermentation with hand‑plunging through a 14‑day ferment. The wine matured 12 months in French oak barrels and spent roughly 13 months in bottle before release. Minimal intervention and careful oak integration give plush texture without hiding the site expression. Cellaring & drinking: Ready now but with potential through the early 2030s. Best enjoyed after a short decant (about 45 minutes) to open the perfume and mid‑palate texture.

Focused on small parcels and site expression, the team harvests select blocks, uses minimal intervention (spontaneous ferments, portionally whole‑cluster) and ages wines in French oak to preserve freshness while adding gentle spice and texture. Grapes from Anthem are chilled and trucked overnight to their Marlborough cellar for careful handling.
