2014 Chateau La Mission Haut Brion

Soul Hook: A magnetic Bordeaux from Pessac-Léognan that wears power and polish at once.

Why choose it?
1) Distinguished terroir -> Gravel soils opposite Haut-Brion give focused minerality and aristocratic structure. 2) Proven pedigree -> Domaine Clarence Dillon stewardship and classic élevage (18 months in oak) promise pedigree without pretense. 3) Ageworthy yet approachable -> Ripe, concentrated fruit balanced by refined tannins—ready to reward decanting tonight or cellaring for decades.

Sommelier's Private Note: On the nose, ripe black fruit folds into cigar-box, cedar and roasted chocolate; a thread of saline/iodine keeps it precise. The palate is broad and muscular at first, then softens into fine-grained, silky tannins and a tobacco-scented finish that lingers. Give it 60–90 minutes in a wide decanter to let the layers blossom.

Winemaking & Ageing: Hand-harvested in a vintage rescued by an Indian summer, fermentations are temperature-controlled to extract ripe colour and flavour. After vinification the wine spent 18 months in oak, developing roasted and empyreumatic notes and a polished tannic frame.

Vineyard Notes: The estate sits on the same gravel terrace as Haut-Brion, spanning Talence and Pessac—deep, well-draining gravel ideal for concentrated, terroir-driven wines. Low yields in 2014 and cool nights in September produced ripe, balanced grapes with excellent phenolic maturity.

Occasion / Pairing: Ideal for celebratory dinners—think premium steak nights, Cantonese roast joints with black pepper glaze, or a chilled evening of tasting with close friends. Works superbly with mature cheeses.

Competitive Edge: Delivers First-Growth class signatures (depth, freshness, minerality) at a fraction of the trophy price—a collector’s wine that rewards both patience and immediate enjoyment.
