Tasting note
A poised Saint-Julien from a Second Growth estate, the 2021 Chateau Leoville Poyferre delivers classic Medoc depth with polished power. On the nose there are layers of black cherry, cassis and ripe plum lifted by violet perfume and subtle cedar. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated yet balanced — ripe dark fruit, cocoa and tobacco weave through firm, well-integrated tannins and bright, saline-acidity. Oak influence is present but measured after twelve months of French barrel ageing, giving mocha and graphite notes that lengthen into a persistent, savory finish. Drink from the late 2020s and cellar comfortably for decades. Producer & winemaking notes: the estate, owned by the Cuvelier family and managed by an experienced team with consulting input, applies meticulous sorting (hand and optical), a week of cold pre-fermentation maceration, selected non-saccharomyces yeast at the must stage and daily pump-overs through fermentation. Vines are managed across some 80 hectares with mature plantings and low yields, producing concentrated fruit with classical Saint-Julien structure.
