Tasting Note: The 2014 Opus One unfolds with fragrant florals, fresh garden herbs and a subtle forest-floor undercurrent that gives way to concentrated black and red fruits—black cherry, blackberry and blackcurrant—lifted by spice-box nuances and a hint of mocha. Fine-grained tannins provide a velvety mouthfeel and structural backbone, carrying the wine to a long, vibrant finish with earthy and spice layers. Producer & Vineyard: Opus One is the collaboration between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, built on a single-minded pursuit of quality. The estate vineyards sit in western Oakville (including parcels within the famed To Kalon Vineyard and surrounding Ballestra and River parcels). A blend of four estate parcels, the vineyards combine traditional hand-harvest practices with selective modern techniques to highlight site expression. Winemaking & Ageing: After a 20-day skin contact period, the wine was matured for 18 months in new French oak barrels. The 2014 growing season featured an early bud break and near-perfect conditions, producing slightly higher yields with excellent ripeness and balance. The result is a focused, refined bottle that balances New World richness with Old World restraint. Cellaring & Service: Drink now with careful decanting (60–90 minutes) or cellar for further development through the next two decades. Best enjoyed with robust red meats, game and mature cheeses.
