Tasting note
A Southern Rhône–style Barossa blend that marries the ripe generosity of old-vine fruit with deft, seasoned-oak restraint. Colour is a bright cherry red; the bouquet opens with warm, sweet spices — cardamom and a hint of paprika — layered over dried and glacéed red fruits, bright pomegranate and a baked-clafoutis note of black cherry dusted with icing sugar. The oak is subtle, having been aged 12–15 months in seasoned French (80%) and American (20%) hogsheads, allowing a woven, multi-textured fruit core to shine. On the palate it is medium-bodied yet opulent: juicy, mouth-coating and succulent, with an interlaced texture of tannins that feel lacy rather than aggressive. The 2019 vintage’s dry, warm conditions gave low yields and concentrated flavours, producing a wine with vivid fruit intensity, savory spice and a well-shaped, lingering finish. Versatile at the table — ideal with grilled or braised red meats and rich, spice-forward dishes.
Winery
Penfolds is one of Australia’s most storied houses, sourcing fruit from long-established Barossa vineyards — some blocks dating back more than a century. Bin 138 was conceived as a Southern Rhône–inspired blend, first released in the early 1990s and elevated to Bin status in 1998. Winemaker Peter Gago and the team select old-vine parcels, ferment and age the component lots separately, then mature the wine for 12–15 months in seasoned French and American hogsheads. The result is a wine that balances ripe, concentrated fruit with restrained, integrated oak and a textural tannin frame.
