Tasting note: The 2023 Château Talbot opens with a clear, classically Saint-Julien bouquet—ripe black fruits, cassis and blackberry, eased by graphite, tobacco and hints of licorice and dark chocolate. Floral top notes (peony) lift the nose. On the palate it is medium–full, ripe and well focused: creamy texture, fine-grained silky tannins and brisk, supportive acidity that keeps the wine energetic. A touch of saline minerality and toasted French oak (16 months) lengthen the finish.
Producer notes: A Fourth Growth with a long family history under the Bignon-Cordier stewardship, Château Talbot is celebrated for consistency and age-worthiness. The team emphasizes elegant, civilized tannins and an expansive, generous character that rewards cellaring.
Winemaking notes: Hand-harvested between 13 September and 6 October, fermentations take place in oak vats followed by 16 months’ ageing in French oak. The wine sees traditional élevage under winemaker Jean-Michel Laporte and the Cordier management, with careful extraction to preserve silk and structure.
Vineyard notes: Sited in Saint-Julien on the Médoc, Talbot’s extensive holdings benefit from classic Medoc terroir—well-drained gravelly terraces and a temperate, maritime influence that promote ripe phenolics and precise acidity. Production is substantial yet attentive (c.300,000 bottles), reflecting the estate’s scale and quality control.
Service & cellaring: Decant about 60 minutes if drinking within the next few years; otherwise this vintage will evolve gracefully over decades (drinking window from around 2030). Pair with roasted or herb-crusted red meats and mature cheeses.
