2008 Opus One

Opus One’s 2008 is a concentrated, elegantly sculpted Napa bottling that marries perfume and structure. Aromas of rose petals and violets give way to cassis, black cherry and blueberry, threaded with marzipan, sandalwood and subtle orange peel. On the palate the wine shows a satiny texture: round, polished tannins are buoyed by bright acidity to deliver a juicy, refined mouthfeel and persistent, spice-laced finish with clove and dark chocolate notes.

Producer & vineyard: Born from the collaboration of Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, Opus One’s estate vineyards sit in the western Oakville AVA — including parcels within the famed To Kalon and surrounding Ballestra and River parcels — where hand-harvesting and a blend of traditional and researched modern practices aim to maximise quality.

Winemaking & ageing: After a 22-day skin contact, the 2008 was aged 17 months in new French oak, shaping its spice, toast and textural richness. The vintage experienced extreme weather and unusually low yields, which concentrated flavors and structure. This is a wine for cellaring yet approachable with judicious decanting.
