The palate is velvety and full, showing layered dark fruit, subtle savory notes and polished tannins that give structure without harshness. The finish is elegant and long, with lingering flavor echoes. Producer Notes: Dominus aims to express the unique character of the Napanook site — purity, complexity and length. The 1989 is described by the estate as profound and powerful, with articulated fruit and refined tannins; a wine that rewarded patience. Winemaking Notes: The house practice is minimalist and meticulous: thorough cluster sorting by hand, optical sorting of berries, and gentle pump-overs to extract aromas and color while preserving finesse. Barrel handling is careful, with hand racking to maintain clarity. Ageing included about 20% new oak, contributing subtle spice and supportive structure. Vineyard & Vintage: Estate-bottled from the Napanook vineyard, the 1989 season was moderate to warm with challenging harvest rains that required pauses in picking. Those pauses contributed to concentrated, intense flavors once harvest resumed. The site’s soils and exposure deliver focused fruit and complexity that are clearly reflected here.
