A landmark Pomerol from a storied estate, the 2016 Chateau Trotanoy shows a deep, brooding nose of black and blue fruits layered with truffle, violet and a hint of menthol. On the palate it is dense and concentrated yet remarkably polished: waves of ripe plum and blackberry compote are wrapped in creamy dark chocolate, cedar and subtle licorice, carried by a frame of very fine, chiselled tannins and a minerally, very long finish. Producer notes stress the unique clay-gravel soils — with an iron-rich "crasse de fer" subsoil — that give power and complexity. Harvest is entirely manual with double sorting; fermentation takes place in small concrete vats and ageing is carried out in mainly new oak. Expect magnificent cellaring potential; decant before serving to let perfumed layers open.
