Tasting note

A concentrated, terroir-driven red from the foot of the Hermitage hill. On the nose it opens with layered black fruits—mulberry and black cherry—over notes of ink, tar and black pepper. The palate is dense and focused: mineral and chalky edges frame a core of dark berry, liquorice and a dark-cocoa savor. Tannins are powerful yet refined, giving structure and longevity; the finish is long and resonant. Producer notes: From biodynamically tended sites owned by M. Chapoutier, this cuvée is born in the Greffieux parcel at the base of the Hermitage hill where glacial alluvial terraces of shingles and clay impart stony minerality. Winemaking: Hand-harvested and fully destemmed, the fruit is vinified in cement vats with long maceration to gently extract ripe tannins; only free-run juice is used. Ageing lasts 14–18 months in oak — about one third new and the remainder in once- or twice-used casks. Clarification is natural and the wine is unfined. Cellaring & service: While approachable now with decanting, the wine has the stuffing for long ageing. Serve slightly below room temperature after an hour’s decant to reveal its layered complexity.
