2022 Outpost True Vineyard Immigrant

Tasting note: A wine of contrasts — a first impression of soft sweetness (a strawberry suggestion) opens into dense, darker fruit: blueberry and blackberry layered with graphite and iron minerality. Oak char, bitter chocolate and espresso join a spice thread of star anise. On the palate it is thick and concentrated, with a massive frame of fine-grained, firm tannins and long, persistent length.
Producer & vineyard: From vines planted high on Howell Mountain, this bottling comes from a steep, well-drained site that yields concentrated fruit with notable minerality and bright lift. The wine is from a limited-production plot run by Outpost Wines; ownership is listed as AXA Millesimes, and the label focuses on small-lot, site-driven expressions typical of mountain fruit.
Winemaking: Fermented in small lots with attention to extraction to achieve intensity without harshness; the team uses a mix of gentle extraction techniques and extended maceration to build texture. The wine sees maturation in oak barrels to round the tannins and add smoky, char and spice complexity.
Cellaring & service: Drinkable now for those who enjoy firm structure, but best development is expected toward the end of the decade. For current drinking, decant about 90 minutes to soften edges and release the layered aromatics. Drinking window: 2025–2041.
