Tasting note
The 1990 Chateau Fonreaud is a classic Bordeaux blend from the Listrac-Medoc appellation. This wine showcases a deep ruby color with a bouquet of cassis, black cherry, and earthy notes. On the palate, it is soft, round, and juicy with a spicy undertone, thanks to the hint of Petit Verdot. The wine is well-structured with balanced acidity and firm tannins, making it a perfect match for grilled lamb, beef stew, aged cheeses, and roasted duck. The vineyard's gravelly Pyrenean soil and limestone subsoil contribute to the wine's rich and nuanced character. The wine is aged for 12 months in merrian oak barrels, with a third replaced each year, ensuring a harmonious blend before bottling.

The name Fonréaud, originally spelled 'Font Reaux', means 'Royal Spring'. According to legend, an English king stopped at this spot in the 11th century to quench his thirst at a spring. The chateau, built in 1855 by Henri Le Blanc de Mauvesin, is known for its elegant architecture. The estate was purchased by Leo Chanfreau in 1962, and today, Jean and Marie-Helene Chanfreau, along with Caroline Chanfreau-Philippon, continue to improve the vineyard. The Cabernet Sauvignon produces a classic wine, with Petit Verdot adding spicy notes and Merlot enhancing the fruity taste. This Cru Bourgeois Supérieur wine is a member of the prestigious Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux.
