Established in 1934 in the rugged coastal terrain of Hokkaido by Masataka Taketsuru, the Father of Japanese Whisky, Yoichi benefits from a maritime climate mirroring the Scottish Highlands. The distillery famously preserves traditional direct coal-fired distillation with pot stills exceeding 1,000°C—an extraordinarily rare artisanal technique globally that yields unparalleled richness and robust weight. In the glass, soft peat smoke intertwines seamlessly with stone fruits, candied orange peel, and toasted oak, followed by a briny seaside salinity carried in from Ishikari Bay.
