2018 Chateau Cantemerle

The 2018 Château Cantemerle is a classic Haut-Médoc expression: deep ruby colour with an elegant bouquet of blackcurrant and blackberry layered with cocoa, cedar, sweet spice and a subtle balsamic lift. On the palate it shows concentrated fruit framed by integrated, fine-grained tannins, lively acidity and a savoury, peppery thread that adds complexity and length. Producer notes highlight Cantemerle’s long history and Fifth Growth status under the Dubos family, and the wine’s polished, marginally oaked profile.
Winemaking: grapes are hand-harvested, fully destemmed and hand-sorted before fermentation (6–8 days at 24–28°C) with a maceration of 20–25 days. The wine aged 12 months in French oak (medium toast), 40% new; an ultra-light fining precedes bottling.
Vineyard: produced from the estate’s cool silica and gravel soils dating from the quaternary era, from mature vines planted at a density of 7,800 plants/ha; the estate spans 92 ha and brings a mineral backbone and focused structure to the wine. With modest residual sugar (≈3 g/L) this is a dry, well-balanced wine — decant for one hour to open up its aromatic layers. Drinking window: 2020–2037.
