2014 Chateau L'If

Soul Hook: An unapologetically elegant Saint-Émilion with a licorice thread and chalky backbone that keeps you coming back.

Why choose it?
1) Estate pedigree -> Crafted by Jacques Thienpont near Troplong Mondot, this is classic Saint-Émilion terroir without the headline markup.
2) Refined structure -> 91% Merlot with bright acidity and chalky tannins gives both immediate pleasure and cellar potential.
3) Balanced oak -> 12–16 months in 50% new French oak offers spice and support without overwhelming the fruit.

Sommelier's Private Note: On the nose expect concentrated black fruit and an immediate licorice note edged with floral lift and tobacco. The palate is compact and tightly wound — chalky tannins and vivid acidity frame pure black cherry and black olive, while subtle spice and truffle notes linger. Decant for an hour to see it open; it rewards time but already shows impressive poise.

Winery & Winemaking: Château L'If is run by the Thienpont family (Jacques Thienpont), who reclaimed a small Saint-Émilion holding close to Troplong Mondot and Valandraud. Vines sit on clay and limestone-clay soils; fermentation takes place in concrete and stainless steel vats, followed by 12–16 months' ageing in French oak (50% new / 50% second fill). Cork closure.

Occasion / Pairing Guide: Perfect for a Saturday roast with friends, a Hong Kong-style western banquet (steak or lamb), or paired with mushroom dishes and aged cheese. Serve slightly below room temperature after 1 hour decant for best expression.

Competitive Edge: Offers near-top-tier Saint-Émilion character — layered fruit, minerality and structure — at a fraction of the marquee price. For collectors and dinner hosts who want pedigree without pretension.
