2006 Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Gevrey Chambertin 1er Clos Saint Jacques

Soul Hook: A pure Premier Cru from Clos Saint-Jacques that balances ripe dark fruit with a stony, mineral spine — elegance with serious depth.

Why choose it?
1) Terroir-driven structure -> South-east exposure and limestone-clay soils deliver focused minerality and lasting structure. Benefit: ageworthy intensity without heaviness.
2) Proven pedigree -> Domaine Armand Rousseau’s meticulous selection and élevage. Benefit: refined oak integration and seamless tannins.
3) Immediate reward, long-term upside -> Approachable now with decanting yet built for continued evolution. Benefit: drink or cellar with confidence.

Sommelier’s Notes: On the nose there’s concentrated blackcurrant and crushed dark berries layered with dried undergrowth, cedar and a hint of leather. The palate is dense yet lithe — saline-mineral lift and firm, smooth tannins frame an intense mid-palate. Oak is present but supportive, adding spice and cedar rather than weight. Best opened with 60 minutes of air to reveal secondary aromatics and textural nuance.

Occasion / Pairing: Works superbly with roast duck or goose, braised game, rich fish with bone marrow, or a mature cheese course. Perfect for intimate celebratory dinners, chef’s tasting menus, or as a collectible for a special anniversary.

Competitive Edge: Compared with larger-name bottlings, this Clos Saint-Jacques shows a more literal expression of its parcel — rarer, more terroir-specific and a direct line to the soil, offering collectors great provenance with demonstrable drinking pleasure.
