In 1855, Bordeaux ranked dozens of châteaux into five levels based on price and reputation—First to Fifth Growth. Simple and direct. Back then, the market was small, and many estates were struggling. This government-approved system was like a lifeline. Crucially, the classification follows the château, not the vineyard. As long as the land is in the same appellation, a château can buy more vineyards and increase production. Take Château Lafite: in 1855 it made about 5,000 cases; today it’s over 30,000—but its First Growth status remains, guaranteeing sales.
And the ultra-wealthy Rothschild family bought two First Growths—Lafite and Château Mouton—which they still own today. Their wealth? It’s like it grows on trees!
