The 1983 Malescot has a moderately dark ruby color, a ripe berryish bouquet, hard, very astringent tannins, medium body, and a severe, compact finish. The wine is tough textured and difficult to penetrate, as well as alcoholic. The question remains, will the fruit outlast the tannins? Anticipated maturity: Now-2003. Last tasted, 3/89.

Tasting note

The 1981 Chateau Malescot-St-Exupery, a Third Growth from the esteemed Margaux appellation, is a testament to the classic and savory profile of Bordeaux's left bank. With a medium body and a concentrated palate, this wine offers a symphony of mint, cassis, and berry notes. The tannins are pronounced, yet with a decanting time of 2 hours, they soften to reveal a long and engaging finish. This vintage, while not as powerful as its successors, has matured into a harmonious and silky texture that is a hallmark of Margaux wines. Pair it with dishes like roast lamb or Beef Wellington to complement its depth and structure.
