2018 Les Hauts de Smith Rouge

A generous and approachable second wine from a Cru Classé estate in Pessac‑Leognan, Les Hauts de Smith 2018 opens with an inviting bouquet of ripe plums, blackberry compote and dark cherry, layered with tobacco, cedar and a lick of smoky oak. The palate is medium-bodied with plush, rounded tannins, integrated freshness and a silky texture — notes of dark chocolate, espresso and spice persist through a long, satisfying finish. Produced under the Cathiard family's stewardship, the estate practices organic/biodynamic principles and crafts this cuvée for earlier pleasure while retaining the estate's signature mineral energy. Vinified with careful extraction and matured in oak to add spice and polish, this wine balances immediate charm with the ability to age a decade or more. Serve gently decanted to open its aromatics; pairs beautifully with roasted and grilled red meats, game, hearty stews and aged cheeses.
