A classic mature Pessac-Léognan from Château La Mission Haut-Brion, this 1987 displays a compelling, complex bouquet of smoky, empyreumatic notes — cigar, cedar, dark chocolate and subtle roast — layered over perfumed black-fruit and dried herb aromatics. On the palate it is round and generous, full-bodied yet refined, with silky tannins that previously asserted structure but have softened with age. Winemaking combines careful temperature-controlled fermentation and rigorous selection, followed by 18–20 months in oak barrels for the finest lots. The vineyard sits on the gravel terraces near Bordeaux, where well-drained soils and a cool maritime influence gave the wine its characteristic minerality and elegance. Drink now; gently decant for about 30 minutes to lift the aromatics and settle any sediment.
