Tasting note
Les Griffons de Pichon Baron 2019 is the estate's vibrant second wine: concentrated, structured and unusually expressive for a youth. The colour is deep purple; the nose opens with ripe black fruits—blackcurrant and blackberry—layered with dark chocolate, espresso roast and a subtle cigar-box oak. On the palate the wine is generous and full, carrying firm, fine-grained tannins and a taut mineral spine that keeps the energy taut and focused. Oak influence is evident but well integrated after 18 months' élevage in barrels (60% new), lending spice and cedar rather than dominance. The terroir shows through as a precise, gravelly minerality, a result of plots near the Gironde estuary and careful viticulture. Drink now with at least an hour of decanting for more open fruit, or cellar for years—this cuvée can evolve gracefully through the 2030s. Winemaking highlights: hand-harvested late September–October, matured 18 months in predominantly new oak, selected parcels vinified to mirror the estate’s signature structure.
Winery
Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron is a historic Pauillac estate now owned by AXA Millésimes. Famous for its precise, classically structured wines, the property combines long-established cellar savoir-faire with modern viticulture. Les Griffons de Pichon Baron was created in 2012 as the estate's second wine — designed to offer a more approachable expression while reflecting the gravelly, estuary-influenced terroirs of the domain. Under technical leadership and a dedicated team, including winemaker Alexandra Lebossé and viticulturist Aymeric Hervy, the winery focuses on parcel selection, careful harvest timing and barrel élevage to balance power and finesse.
